To enter or not to enter

I made a horror short and since that crazy year 2020 made it difficult to enter it into film festivals, I waited. I had no idea what to do with my movie “Entity Within” now. I posted it on YouTube and so did the director. His YouTube got over 300 views of my film, mine got maybe 34 views. I was not getting the results I wanted. It took me 10 years to get my short made. I wrote it in 2010 with the brilliant idea that I would write, produce and act in my own movie.

What better way to get cast in a movie right, just write it, produce it and then you can act in it. It seemed simple enough. I mean how hard is it to make a movie. That was my thinking back in 2010. I had no idea how naive I was at the time. Not to mention I had no idea how to write a script. I actually hand wrote a 500 page romantic comedy. I was not aware that one page of a script was one minute of screen time. So I had a 500 minute romcom. Who wouldn’t love to sit through an 8 hour and 33 minute movie.

I learned something very important that year, it’s not easy trying to figure out how to organize 500 pages of a story that’s written on paper and out of order. I didn’t write from beginning, middle and end. I wrote the middle, the beginning, the end and bounced all over the place when I wrote. I had no idea where any of my story was now. I actually tried taping the pages all over the walls of my house to piece this puzzle together and break it down.

Trying to break a movie down onto index cards is not very useful either. I have no idea how, but I managed to put my story puzzle into the proper order. I even managed to break it down into a 94 page script. Nothing ever came of it. I had a few people read it and they liked it a lot. Other than that my script ended up in a drawer, then a box and I would stumble upon it every so often.

My horror short was only five pages, but it ended up being a little over 14 minutes of screen time. It’s still on YouTube and I have 164 views now. The view count is at the amount it is because I keep playing it to drive up the views. I also finally was able to enter my film into film festivals in 2021. I decided to go with Film Freeway. I can honestly say I will never use them again. It seemed like a good idea at the time. You can enter into several festivals online.

How did I decide which festivals to enter was easy. I chose all the ones that had no cost to enter since I was on a budget. The results over the months of my film being entered into several festivals were dismal. Every email I have received was that my film was not accepted or my favorite one was the one I received today in which the email said I was disqualified, it gave no reason why.

The reason I will never use Film Freeway again is because if your film is not accepted into one or more festival, any other festival you enter into will see that it was rejected by other festivals and will reject your film based on the other rejections. Besides that, I never watch a movie just because it won best whatever at a film festival. Usually I avoid watching movies that were in or won a film festival award. That’s just me though.

So why did I bother even entering into any festival at all. I was bored and thought it would be cool if I won. So much for that idea.
